Digitalisation streamlines business processes and opens the path to innovation through new products, services and business models. However, many companies do not quite know where to start, or they launch digital projects that are put on hold after a while or simply remain unfinished.

Small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) account for 70% of employment in Belgium’s private sector. However, they are underrepresented in digital innovation projects compared to large corporations and digital start-ups. The countless international reports on digitalisation usually cater to the latter two. Nevertheless, the subject is of key importance to Belgian SMEs. That is why Agoria - the Belgian federation for the technology industry - for the first time, has mapped the digitalisation of industrial SMEs. 

The report delves into the question of how do companies that make the most of digitalisation differ from those that do not and what is the secret of a successful digital transformation. It provides an overview of the current state of digitisation in Belgian industrial SMEs. Based on interviews with 400 companies, 7 golden rules for establishing a digital culture are formulated.

The results show a direct link between the way of thinking and working, the culture and the extent to which digital projects are successful. That is why ‘Digital is a mindset' is the cornerstone of the recommendations provided within this study.
