Introducing Skills Management in SMEs

This publication from the European Commission, in the context of the Pact For Skills, presents a recap of the first Peer Learning Activity conducted for the Pact. The publication begins with a general overview of skills management in SMEs and how this process revolves around three aspects:
Analysis and planning: Identifying current and future skills needs through business environment and workforce analysis to pinpoint skills gaps and develop strategies to address them
Skills utilisation: Maximising the effective use of employees' existing skills by redesigning roles and reassigning employees to positions where their skills are best utilised
Skills development: Enhancing skill levels within the company by identifying training needs and providing appropriate development opportunities based on the skills gaps identified.
Furthermore, the publication explains the current state of skills and SMEs in Europe, focusing on the initiatives for upskilling and reskilling initiated both by the companies and by the European Union. Moreover, the document provides examples of SMEs member of the Pact for Skills that are engaged in the upskilling and reskilling of the workforce.
Finally, the publication concludes by underlining the benefits that skills management would bring to companies, more efficient recruitment process and increased productivity, for individuals, increased skills development, and for society, improvement in the matching of supply and demand of skills.
