Online Conference 'Countering Online Disinformation and Hate Speech to Foster Peace'
This conference organised by UNESCO with the support of the European Union for the international day of Peace and in preparation of the Universal Access to Information Day aims to answer questions around:
- The role of social media in promoting peace and access to information

To achieve this, a high level opening session with speakers will be organised as well as the panels where two European-funded projects will be presented. Speakers will include:
- Věra Jourová, Vice-President of the European Commission
- Hilde Hardemarn, Head of SErvice Foreign Policy Instrument of the European Commission
- Guy Berger, Director of UNESCO Communication and Information SEctor
- Alice Wairimu Nderitu, Special Adviser of the UN Secretary-General on the Prevention of Genocide
- Matt Brittin, President of Google Europe, Middle East and Africa
- Neil Potts; Vice-President of Public Policy at Facebook
The two European projects presented are the "Social Media 4 Peace" project and "#CoronavirusFacts, Addressing the 'Disinfodemic' on COVID-19 in conflict-prone environments". The panels for these projects will address how digital technologies can be harnessed to be critical factors in peace-building as well as lessons learned from these projects and the areas that will require further engagement and action.
Registration is required for this event. Make sure to take advantage of this opportunity to learn about how social media can support peace and promote access to information.
