Founded in 1583, the University of Edinburgh is one of Scotland's four ancient universities and one of the oldest ones in the United Kingdom itself. Today, the University of Edinburgh offers programmes on undergraduate, postgraduate and higher levels for more than 35,000 students and employs more than 10,000 members of research, administrative and supporting staff. The university is part of a number of higher education alliances of excellence - such as the Russel Group and is home to many famous authors, scientists, politicians, and thinkers - from the its founding to this day.

The university has a strong focus on medicine, natural and life sciences and is behind a number of research projects on the topics of emerging technologies. Subjects of competence include: artificial intelligence (AI), computer science, cybersecurity, cloud and high performance computing, and many others.
