20 year anniversary of the University of Luxembourg - poster with uni alumni

This year is a special one for the University of Luxembourg: it's jubilee time. For the last 2 decades, not one or two alumni have come out of the University with flying colours, making their mark on Europe and the world. And two decades later, the University is celebrating 20 years since its birth - 20 years dedicated to students, research, and society.

To celebrate properly, the University is launching a new series of public lectures. Why? To commemorate remarkable achievements made possible - and recognise the exceptional individuals that have played a vital role in the university's success globally.

From start-up to an institution: the story of the University of Luxembourg

In August 2003, the Higher Education Act was passed in Parliament, marking the commencement of an exciting journey to establish Luxembourg’s sole public university. The University was envisioned to be research-focused, international, and multilingual. Its mission was to attract talent and provide higher education in areas of significance for the country and society, with the ultimate goal of contributing to the development of Luxembourg as a knowledge-driven society.

Two decades later, the University has remained steadfast in upholding these founding principles. What began as an academic start-up has evolved into an internationally renowned research university with a distinct multilingual and interdisciplinary character, earning prominent positions in global university rankings. Presently, the University comprises 6,000 students, including 1,000 doctoral candidates, and serves an additional 1,000 individuals through continuing education programs, representing 130 nationalities. The University’s workforce consists of over 2,400 individuals, and its alumni network boasts 14,000 graduates employed both within Luxembourg and abroad.

Science for everyone: New Public lecture series “20 Years of Ideas”

Celebrations kicked off on 14 September 2023 with an official opening event at the Belval Campus, attended by partners, supporters, and members of civil society, with the esteemed presence of His Royal Highness the Grand Duke. During the launch, organisers presented an overview of upcoming public science lectures on a range of key topics across areas of interest. Jumping from the world of FinTech to the nitty-gritty intricacies of public law, through the dynamics of the housing market in Luxembourg, or the evolution of digital history - the lectures cover virtually all sectors, making sure anyone can find a topic they are interested in. These lectures will be conducted in various languages, spanning from September 21st through February 29th, 2024, ensuring that knowledge is accessible to everyone who wishes to partake in this intellectual journey.
