Founded in 2004, Meta Platforms Inc. (then Facebook) is an American multinational technology conglomerate parent to various products and services. Notably, it is the parent company to Facebook, Messenger (launched in 2011), Instagram (acquired in 2012), WhatsApp (acquired in 2014), Oculus Rift (launched 2015), Workplace (launched 2016), and Portal and Portal+ (launched 2018). It is considered one of the Big Five American information technology companies.
As of 2021, the company rebranded to Meta Platforms Inc. - Meta in short - to focus on the development of the "metaverse". This is intended to be an integrated environment for all of Meta's products and services.
