National Strategies

Artificial intelligence (AI) offers great potential for economic growth, but will also have a significant impact on society. Therefore, it is important for the future to use AI in a way that is beneficial to society.

The Austrian strategy on Artificial Intelligence was adopted in 2021 and covers the period up until 2030. At the end of this page, you can download a translated English version of the Austrian strategy.

European basis of the Austrian AI strategy

In April 2018, the European Commission developed a roadmap on AI, which was complemented by a White Paper in 2020 and then followed by another batch in 2021. It contains an updated version of the coordinated Action Plan on AI and the first draft of an AI regulation worldwide. The Austrian strategy "Artificial Intelligence Mission Austria 2030" (AIM AT 2030) is driven by this approach. Developed by more than 160 experts from science, industry, civil society and public administration, the Austrian strategy is based on the two pillars of the European target:

  • Ecosystem for trust
  • Ecosystem for excellence

Objectives and focus of the Austrian AI strategy

The objectives of the Austrian strategy include the use of AI for the common good and to make Austria an internationally recognised location for research and innovation. The strategy also aims to secure Austria's competitiveness as a technology and business location. The fields of action covered by AIM AT 2030 include:

  • the preconditions for trustworthy AI;
  • and the creation of an AI ecosystem

Within the scope of the field of action "Trustworthy AI", the focus is on defining ethical principles and creating a meaningful legal framework. AI in the world of work, the creation of an AI standard and the security of AI systems are key issues together with the social dialogue.

In order to create an AI ecosystem, data must be made usable, infrastructure must be created and knowledge must be developed and used. The focus is on strengthening the country's economic competitiveness and modernising public administration through AI.

Fields of application for AI include climate change mitigation, digitised energy systems, sustainable mobility, agriculture, space applications, urban and energy planning, manufacturing, construction, healthcare, arts, media and creative industries, and education.
