Slovakia - Supporting the development of 5G networks in Slovakia for 2020-2025

The Supporting the development of 5G networks in Slovakia for 2020-2025 is a strategic document adopted by Slovak Government in 2019. The document aims to contribute to Slovakia’s digital transformation in terms of building a modern, functional and secure electronic communications infrastructure, which is a prerequisite not only for the development of modern services for citizens and businesses, but also to enable the connectivity of all systems, their communication with each other and their efficient management and supervision.

The vision in terms of 5G networking in Slovakia is defined as follows: In line with the EU Digital Single Market Strategy, the Slovak Republic will build a top-class 5G information and communication infrastructure and use the wide range of opportunities offered by this technology for the development of the Slovak society and economy.

The development of 5G networks in Slovakia and the modern applications that will use them will support the transition to the Gigabit society and, with the support of the related legislation, will contribute to enhancing the security of electronic communications networks. Connectivity provided by new technologies will create new business opportunities, open markets and support citizens in their daily lives, e.g. by promoting new models of workplace communication or communication with government. At the same time, it will provide access to the information and services that can increasingly be expected to expand into normal areas of life. 

5G technology will enable the development of applications such as augmented reality, mixed reality or virtual reality. These applications will be useful not only in the field of digital entertainment, but also in the fields of health, vocational training and distance learning, remote monitoring of infrastructure, production processes, agriculture or agricultural and environmental management.

Globally, 5G is one of the most important technologies in the digital transformation. The deployment of 5G will lead to a gradual shift in the provision of services through mobile connectivity, with the potential to increase productivity and economic growth, and it is important that this benefits the whole country.
