FabLab in the House of Digitalization - Getting to know digital Production Tools

Digital technologies have become an integral part of our daily lives as well as in industrial production: which is sometimes called "Industry 4.0". 

The FabLab (which opened in March 2023 at the House of Digitalization in Tulln) aims to teach basic skills in this field and provide a hands-on, interactive way to explore new career paths. 3D printers, VR headsets, laser cutters, and many other computer-assisted devices and applications are available in a space of just under 100 square meters.

Hands-on workshops make technical equipment accessible to children and teenagers. Participants are invited to carry out a wide variety of projects on their own. The spectrum ranges from coding and programming to 3D printing with cornstarch-based plastics, as well as the potential applications of virtual reality and augmented reality.

Workshops are offered for school classes (as part of Science Class) as well as for teens and families (as part of Science Afternoon). The duration of the workshops is tailored to the respective grade level or age group and ranges from one to three hours. Bookings can be made via the Science Center Lower Austria website. The educational programs were developed in cooperation with the Technologykids association and the St. Pölten University of Applied Sciences. Attendance at the Fab Lab workshops is free of charge.

What makes the FabLab good practice?

The FabLab at the House of Digitalization in Tulln offers children and young people easy access to key Industry 4.0 production technologies through hands-on workshops. The workshops are pedagogically tailored to each age group. The FabLab’s modern equipment allows young participants to experience the technological possibilities of Industry 4.0 firsthand, thereby providing a practical insight into contemporary career fields. The FabLab thus fills a gap in skills training, as evidenced by the high demand: within the first year, it already welcomed around 3,000 visitors.
