University of Helsinki Created byGalina MISHEVA|Updated10 April 2025Since its establishment in 1640, the University of Helsinki has contributed to fostering a fair and equal society through a multi-disciplinary approach to education in Finland.The University, which is Finland's oldest education institution, promotes excellence in research in almost all academic areas, often ranking within the top 100 universities in the world according to global rankings. With more than 30,000 students and around 10,000 members of staff, teaching is conducted across 4 campuses in Helsinki: the City Centre, Kumpula, Meilahti and Viikki. In addition, the University has research stations in Hyytiälä, Värriö, Kilpisjärvi and Kenya. The University of Helsinki has 12 faculties: Science, Medicine, Arts, Educational sciences, Law, Theology, two faculties of Social Sciences, Pharmacy, Biological and Environmental sciences, Agriculture and Forestry, and Veterinary Medicine. Within the framework of the Finnish Presidency of the European Council in 2019, the University of Helsinki also launched a series of free courses on Artificial Intelligence (AI).
