Founded in 1911, today the University of Porto is home to more than 30.000 students and employs close to 2.000 members of staff. The university has a strong research focus: R&D activities have significantly expanded in recent years, largely due to increased funding for R&D centres, academic excellence, and availability of research grants. The University of Porto has 14 faculties, a business school, and more than 50 research centres. It is consistently ranked among the best Portuguese universities, and in Europe's top 100.
