Media Literacy for Older People – Learning Opportunities for Everyday Digital Life Created byDörte Stahl|Updated27 April 2026The Medien|66 project, run by the Saarland State Media Authority (LMS), is aimed at people aged 60 and older and helps them develop digital skills. It is part of the state’s senior citizen policy strategy, “Saar66,” and offers free media literacy courses at 21 locations across the Saarland. The focus is on everyday topics related to the use of smartphones and tablets. In so-called “tablet meetups,” participants learn how to use digital applications and receive support from qualified instructors who are regularly on site and available as points of contact.Content and offersThe courses cover a wide range of topics relevant to everyday digital life. These include digital payments, data security and organization on smartphones, accessible applications, AI voice systems, and safe internet browsing. Topics such as emergency apps and digital communication are also covered. The LMS develops the course content and trains instructors who conduct the programs independently. Additionally, there is the option to offer courses in cooperation with external organizations such as associations or municipalities. The prerequisite is that the events are free of charge and accessible to all.Target groups and partnersThis program is aimed at older adults in Saarland, particularly those aged 60 and older. In addition, the project is integrated into various networks, including the DigitalPakt Alter and the Digital-Kompass. These partnerships support the development of accessible programs and promote the social participation of older adults. Why is it a good practice? The project demonstrates continuous development and adaptation to societal needs. It was launched in 2016 under the name “Virtual Multigenerational House” with an initial four locations. In the years that followed, the program was gradually expanded and now includes 21 locations in the Saarland. With its integration into the state strategy “Saar66” in 2025, the target group was clearly focused on people aged 60 and older, and the content was adapted to key topics such as health, mobility, housing, and participation. At the same time, low-threshold access was maintained through free offerings. The combination of regional presence, continuous content development, and the training of instructors enables the long-term establishment of media education for older target groups. Since services on topics such as “digital payments” and “on the go and while traveling” are in particularly high demand, the Saarland State Media Authority plans to offer additional courses in these areas. To this end, there will be a collaboration with the Saarland Ministry of Environment, Climate, Mobility, Agriculture, and Consumer Protection.Funding and implementationThe project is implemented by the Saarland State Media Authority (LMS) and fully funded by the Saarland Ministry of Labour, Social Affairs, Women and Health.Good practice detailsWebsite linkMedia |66 - Saarland State Media AgencyTarget audienceDigital skills for allDigital technology / specialisationCybersecurityDigital skillsDigital skill levelBasicGeographic scope - CountryGermanyShow lessIndustry - field of education and trainingGeneric programmes and qualifications not further definedGeographical sphereRegional initiativeType of fundingPublicLog in to comment
