My Digital Bank: Easy and Safe

“My Digital Bank: Easy and Safe” is a national Spanish initiative developed by Asociación Somos Digital with the support of the Spanish Banking Association (AEB) and its Foundation. The project was created to address the growing digital and financial exclusion experienced by older adults, particularly those living in rural areas, who often struggle to access online banking services safely and independently.

About the initiative

The initiative combines practical digital skills training with a strong human-centered approach. Participants receive face-to-face support through small group workshops focused on cybersecurity, online banking operations, and ATM usage. The program also includes a “train-the-trainer” model, equipping facilitators from Digital Skills Centers across Spain with the tools and expertise needed to continue supporting local communities.

One of the project’s most innovative elements is the development of realistic digital banking simulators for mobile banking, web banking, and ATM operations. These simulators create safe, risk-free environments where participants can practice essential banking tasks such as transfers, PIN changes, card blocking, or using Bizum without fear of making mistakes.

Why is this a good practice?

The project is an example of good practice because it tackles digital exclusion through an inclusive, accessible, and highly practical methodology. Instead of relying only on online learning, the initiative prioritises in-person support, adapted pacing, and personalised guidance, helping participants build confidence alongside technical skills. This approach is particularly effective for older adults and people with low digital literacy.

The initiative also demonstrates significant measurable impact. Although the original target was to train 2,500 citizens and 150 facilitators, the project far exceeded expectations by training almost 10,000 citizens and more than 800 trainers through nearly 2,000 workshops delivered in 654 localities across Spain. This shows both strong community demand and the model's effectiveness.

Through the national network of Digital Skills Centres, the project can easily be replicated in new territories while continuing to provide long-term local support. The open-access learning materials, modular structure, and reusable simulators make the initiative transferable and adaptable to future digital banking needs.

The project contributes directly to Europe’s Digital Decade goals by promoting basic digital skills, financial autonomy, and digital inclusion for vulnerable groups. By empowering older adults to navigate digital banking independently and safely, the initiative helps ensure that digital transformation remains accessible and inclusive for all citizens.
