NERO - AdvaNced cybErsecurity awaReness ecOsystem for SMEs

NERO (advaNced cybErsecurity awaReness ecOsystem for SMEs) is a strategic initiative funded by the European Commission under the Digital Europe Programme. It aims to bolster the cyber-resilience of SMEs by fostering a "security-first" culture through a unified digital ecosystem. NERO was created focusing on SMEs, which are critical to the economy but are disproportionately vulnerable to increasingly sophisticated cyber threats.

About this initiative

The initiative addresses several key challenges including:

  1. The "Human Link": Recognizing that 82% of data breaches involve a human element, NERO targets behavior through awareness and education, as recommended by ENISA.
  2. Resource Scarcity: SMEs often lack the dedicated budgets, specialized personnel, and technical expertise required to manage advanced security tools.
  3. Evolving Threat Landscape: Small businesses face rising risks from AI-enabled disinformation, ransomware, and supply chain targeting that they cannot combat alone.

The primary objective is to improve cybersecurity preparedness through five interrelated frameworks

  1. VICTORIOUS: Improving software security via bug bounty programs and crowdsourced vulnerability discovery.
  2. AUDACIOUS: Enhancing auditing resilience through automated application security testing.
  3. CYBIT: Providing a "Cyber Immunity Toolkit" for identifying, protecting, and responding to threats.
  4. ARCANA: Creating a user-friendly Marketplace to connect SMEs with affordable, market-ready security solutions.
  5. ASTRAS: Boosting cyber hygiene through gamified training and advanced "cyber range" simulations.

Why is this a good practice?

NERO is designed to support its 16-partner consortium and the broader SME community by providing practical validation through the testing of solutions in high-impact sectors, including patient data protection in healthcare, supply chain resilience in transportation and logistics, and transaction security in finance.

The initiative facilitates upskilling by delivering hands-on, expert-led training sessions tailored to manage real-world cyber challenges and enhances accessibility by making innovative, state-of-the-art security tools reachable for non-technical users via a centralized, easy-to-use marketplace. Furthermore, NERO drives market growth by helping cybersecurity providers reach a wider network of potential adopters to mature their research outcomes into market-ready products.

By creating this resilient ecosystem, NERO helps SMEs minimize financial and reputational risks while ensuring they remain competitive in the digital single market.
