STEM4Girls UC3M

STEM4Girls UC3M is an outreach programme that aims to inspire girls and young women to pursue careers in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM), with a particular emphasis on information and communication technologies (ICT). Launched in 2018, it addresses the persistent gender gap in digital fields by combining technical training, mentoring, role models and creative educational approaches.

Despite women representing more than half of university students in Spain, their participation in ICT degrees such as computer science, telecommunications and cybersecurity remains low. The programme was designed to intervene early, countering stereotypes, lack of visible role models and low confidence. It combines practical digital skills with activities that strengthen belonging and interest in technology careers.

Get to know the initiative

Key activities include:

  • Mentoring and competitions where university staff and students support girls in developing projects in artificial intelligence, data science and app development, including challenges like Technovation Girls.

  • Hands-on workshops on cybersecurity, robotics, virtual reality, app development and quantum computing

  • The “mirror effect”, which connects participants with female researchers and ICT professionals, providing visible role models and helping participants imagine themselves in STEM careers.

  • Performing arts initiatives such as stage plays, which present stories of women scientists through theatre, making STEM more accessible and engaging.

  • Educational resources including podcasts, videos and guides that highlight female achievements in STEM and extend learning beyond workshops.

The programme also offers access to university laboratories and facilities, helping reduce barriers to higher education and making ICT careers feel more attainable. All activities are free and inclusive, reaching girls from diverse backgrounds, including low-income families and those with special educational needs.

Why is it a good practice?

STEM4Girls UC3M primarily benefits girls and young women in primary and secondary education, building digital skills, confidence and ambition. Secondary beneficiaries include university students acting as mentors, teachers gaining educational tools, families supporting STEM pathways, and female professionals gaining outreach experience.

Since its launch, the programme has reached more than 7,000 participants. Each year, over 500 girls take part, supported by more than 90 female STEM professionals and students. It collaborates with over 100 educational institutions and has received seven national awards. Evaluation results show that 77% of participants report increased confidence and stronger interest in STEM studies and careers.

The initiative is notable for combining technical training, mentoring, creative storytelling and exposure to university environments. By integrating advanced technologies such as AI, cybersecurity, robotics and quantum computing with arts-based learning and female role models, it offers a replicable model for reducing the gender gap in technology and strengthening Europe’s digital talent pipeline.
