European High Performance Computing Joint Undertaking (EuroHPC JU)

The European High Performance Computing Joint Undertaking (EuroHPC JU) is a joint initiative, which brings together a wide range of stakeholders: the European Union, the EU member states, as well as numerous private actors, to develop a world-class supercomputing ecosystem in Europe. 

The initiative was established to coordinate efforts and pool the resources of the EU and the participating countries to develop world-class exascale supercomputers and innovative supercomputing high-level technologies. The main goal of EuroHPC JU is to make Europe a world leader in High Performance Computing (HPC). EuroHPC JU aims to provide supercomputing solutions that would ensure a digital and technological autonomy for Europe and solidify Europe's reputation as a leader in this field. 

The initiative aims to support the development of a world-class supercomputing infrastructure in Europe by deploying, and securing, 3 pre-exascale computers, 1 exascale, and 5-petascale computers in Europe by 2024. These cutting-edge machines will be located around different countries in Europe and will be available for the public-private use and for the scientific and industrial communities, encouraging an increased use of HPC technology throughout industrial sectors and academic areas of research. By providing access to supercomputing resources to public institutions and private businesses (especially small and medium sized entreprises, or SMEs), Euro HPC JU aims to also streamline research and innovation activities. Another Another objective of the initiative is to facilitate research and innovation activities in the area of HPC.

With 9 supercomputers under construction within Europe currently, the initiative directly contributes to ensuring European competitiveness on a global scale through effective technological uptake and innovation in deployment. In particular, through the creation of a network of national HPC Competence Centres, the initiative seeks to strengthen the European knowledge of HPC technologies and stimulate technology supply within the Union.
