MIDay

280 schools and 27 500 students from all over Latvia participated in the Day of AI initiative on Tuesday, 17 March, organised by RTU Riga Business School (RBS) in cooperation with the RAI-RAISE movement of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). Day of AI is one of the initiatives supported by the Code4Europe project grants in Latvia.

Participation in the initiative provides schools with access free educational materials adapted to the Latvian educational context, which help students understand the working principles of artificial intelligence, its daily use, as well as related ethical, safety and responsible use issues. The materials are designed to work with students aged 12-17 and can be integrated into different subjects.

On 17 March, schools had the opportunity to connect to specially prepared online classes on artificial intelligence for different class groups at a certain time. In them, students learned how AI systems are designed, how they make decisions, why technologies sometimes make mistakes, and how to use AI tools in a meaningful and responsible way. In addition to online classes, students participated in a practical exercise with the class, where they had the opportunity to test their knowledge and creativity. The best teams competed for valuable prizes.

Day of AI is an international educational initiative developed by the world’s leading Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) to offer schools around the world free customisable teaching materials on artificial intelligence. Since it's launch in 2021, the programme has been implemented in more than 170 countries, involving more than 1.5 million pupils and 50 000 educators. In Latvia, the initiative is being implemented with the support of the Foundation AUGT, Swedbank Latvia and the Code4Europe project.

More information about the initiative is available on the RTU Riga Business School website.
