The AI revolution needs more people, not fewer

Every time a transformative technology appears, the same question arises: Will it destroy more jobs than it creates? Artificial intelligence is no exception. Headlines tend to focus on positions that might disappear, but that vision only tells a part of the story.

The reality is more complex and depending on the approaches, perhaps more hopeful.

It is true that AI automates tasks that until now required human intervention. Many repetitive, administrative or information-processing-based activities will be able to be carried out more quickly and cost-effectively. However, automating tasks does not necessarily mean eliminating professions. In most cases, it transforms the content of the work and shifts the value towards what machines do not yet do well: understand context, make decisions, build trust, lead teams, create ideas and connect with people.

The data supports this view. The World Economic Forum's Future of Jobs Report 2025 estimates that, by 2030, technological transformation will lead to the disappearance of millions of jobs, but also the creation of an even greater volume of new job opportunities, with a positive net balance of approximately 78 million jobs worldwide. Economic history shows that great technological revolutions do not eliminate work; change the skills that the market demands.

And therein lies the real challenge.

Companies are no longer looking only for professionals with technical knowledge. They are looking for people capable of continuous learning. Adaptive capacity has become a strategic competency. Knowing how to use artificial intelligence tools begins to be as relevant as it was to master spreadsheets or the Internet two decades ago.

But technical skills are only part of the equation. Deeply human competences are becoming increasingly valuable: critical thinking to validate AI-generated information, creativity to ask better questions and find original solutions, communication to explain complex ideas clearly, and emotional intelligence to manage teams and relationships in constantly changing environments.

Paradoxically, the more machines advance, the more important the capabilities that make us human become.

A new professional profile is also emerging: the AI-enhanced worker. It's not about competing against technology, it's about learning how to work with it. A lawyer can analyze jurisprudence in minutes, a doctor can rely on diagnostic systems, an engineer can accelerate the development of projects and a teacher can customize materials for each student. Productivity no longer depends solely on the time spent, but on the ability to combine human experience with intelligent tools.

This implies a cultural change for both companies and workers.

Organisations are identifying the need to invest more in lifelong learning and reskilling and upskilling processes, while professionals will need to assume that learning will no longer be a life stage, but a lifelong activity.

There is a real risk: Those who do not have access to training could be left behind. Therefore, digital transformation should not only be measured by technological development, but also by the ability to make that transition inclusive. Technology alone does not guarantee progress; It is the people who determine how it is used.

To look at artificial intelligence only from the prism of labor substitution is to keep the photograph of the present and ignore the entire film. The real revolution is not that machines do our jobs, but that we can spend more time on what brings the most value.

Perhaps in a few years we will not remember this stage as the moment when AI took jobs from us, but as the moment when we redefine what it means to provide value in the professional world. The tools will change. Professions will evolve. But curiosity, the ability to learn, judgment and collaboration will remain the engines of the most successful races.

The future of employment does not belong to those who compete against artificial intelligence, but to those who learn to grow alongside it. That is probably the most hopeful news of all.
