Classroom

As educators and industry professionals, we often talk about “preparing students for the future of work,” but what does this look like in practice? What happens when 39 brilliant, tech-savvy young people aged 12–15 step directly into an active digital innovation hub?

True educational coupling occurs when young minds leave the classroom and enter spaces where technology is built, tested, and actively protected. Our recent sessions for the MG2i Summer Bootcamp offered far more than just a typical educational trip to DiHubMT; MCAST’s warm welcome of students from Future Innovators and Future Innovators Plus provided an inspiring glimpse into Malta’s digital future. Let’s take a closer look behind the scenes of their visit and explore why practical immersion and early industry touchpoints matter now more than ever.

As Malta’s European Digital Innovation Hub (EDIH), DiHubMT’s mission extends well beyond supporting enterprises – it actively fosters the talent pipeline that will sustain our digital ecosystem. Connecting academic curiosity with the realities of industry must start early. Across two dynamic sessions – hosting 19 students first, followed by 20 in the second round – we set out to demystify innovation, unveil the startup journey, and show these young minds where their future skills fit into Malta’s technological landscape.

Tracing the Journey from Idea to Innovation

For students of this age, the concept of “innovation” can often feel distant and abstract. In my opening presentation, my goal was to break down that barrier by outlining a clear and practical path from a raw concept to a market-ready innovation.

We explored:

  • Shaping the Journey: How an initial concept receives structured mentoring and support to mature into a viable venture.

  • Testing Before Investing: The importance of prototyping and validating high-tech solutions in a risk-free environment before making major business commitments.

  • Upskilling the Workforce: The critical need for continuous learning and digital upskilling in an ever-evolving market.

By demonstrating how DiHubMT acts as a catalyst for startups, students were able to see tangibly that their own creative ideas can find a structured home where they can grow.

Expanding Horizons: Career Pathways and Digital Awareness

Following the overview of the centre, Mr. Rob Rizzo took the stage to address the broader mission of the Malta Digital Innovation Authority (MDIA) and introduce the wide array of careers in ICT. His session challenged traditional stereotypes about technology roles, showing students how combining their personal passions—whether in art, logic, storytelling, or problem-solving—with digital skills opens the door to promising and multidisciplinary careers.

What stood out most during both sessions was the remarkable engagement of the students. Rather than simply absorbing information, these adolescents demonstrated a strong awareness of current cybersecurity threats and emerging technologies. Their targeted questions and quick insights have made it clear that today's youth are not merely passive tech consumers, but active and critical observers of the digital landscape. To reinforce these concepts in an accessible way, we provided every student with a copy of MDIA’s Maltaverians, a locally produced comic book designed to raise awareness of safe digital habits and cybersecurity literacy.

Bringing the Theory to life: Laboratory Experience

The day concluded with a guided tour of DiHubMT’s specialized laboratory facilities, led by Mr. Thomas Owen Attard. Walking through these physical labs has provided the crucial link between conceptual understanding and real-world application.

Witnessing the exact environments where advanced concepts are prototyped, tested, and realized has transformed abstract theories into something tangible and actionable. This sparked spontaneous questions, prompted curious discussions, and allowed students to imagine themselves working in professional technological spaces one day.

Why Visits to the Educational Industry are Important

Organising visits such as the MG2i Summer Bootcamp is not simply about showcasing facilities; it is about early alignment. When educational pathways intersect directly with industry hubs, students gain:

  • Contextual Clarity: They discover why the skills they learn at school matter in the wider global market.

  • Direct Access: Meeting industry professionals normalizes careers in technology and makes them feel accessible regardless of gender or background.

  • Early Inspiration: First-hand experience with advanced facilities plants the seeds for future entrepreneurship and technical specialization long before final academic choices are made.

Building Malta’s digital future depends on maintaining this strong bridge. By welcoming young minds into spaces like DiHubMT today, we ensure that tomorrow’s workforce remains curious, security-conscious, and ready to lead.
