Diagnosis of digital talent in Spain: a structural gap between training and the labour market Created byCristina VICUÑA|UpdatedagoThe acceleration of the digitalization process in Spain is revealing a problem that, although not new, acquires an increasing dimension: the inadequacy of professionals with scientific-technological training. This mismatch, shared with other European countries, has a particularly notable impact in Spain due to the pace of expansion of sectors such as artificial intelligence, cybersecurity and data analysis. The increase in demand, together with the limited availability of qualified profiles, has generated a gap that restricts both business competitiveness and the country's capacity for innovation.The digital talent gapThe figures confirm the imbalance. At present, it is estimated that there are about 100,000 unfilled digital vacancies, which shows the distance between the educational offer and the real needs of the productive fabric. More than 90% of technology companies say they have found it difficult to hire specialists in the last twelve months. This scenario not only suggests a quantitative but also a qualitative deficit: It is not enough to increase the number of trained professionals, but to ensure that their preparation is in line with the dizzying changes in technology.Obsolescence of knowledge and continuous learningThe rapid obsolescence of technical knowledge intensifies the challenge. Skills considered advanced five years ago may be insufficient today, in a context marked by the emergence of new tools, methodologies and digital models. For this reason, technological training has ceased to be understood as a phase prior to working life to become a process of continuous updating. Lifelong learning capacity emerges as well as a strategic competence for both professionals and organizations.Strengthening collaboration In parallel, the Spanish education system is going through an adaptation phase. Although significant progress has been made in recent years in basic digital skills and in the widespread use of technologies by students, a gap persists with respect to the demands of specialization posed by the market. This mismatch is especially visible in STEM settings, where technical depth, analytical ability and cognitive flexibility are essential to respond to ever-evolving work environments.Evidence suggests that formal training alone is not enough. Closing the talent gap will require strengthened cooperation between public administrations, schools and businesses. A greater connection between these actors would facilitate the rapid updating of curricula, allow the integration of emerging technologies in teaching and contribute to the creation of training pathways aligned with the work reality.
