Certificates, master craftsman’s degrees, and continuing education credentials are central components of the vocational training system. They document acquired qualifications and build trust in professional credentials. With advancing digitalisation, procedures that enable quick and reliable verification of the authenticity of such documents are becoming increasingly important. Digital certificates and digital verification procedures are increasingly complementing traditional paper documents.

Digital Authenticity Verification in the Skilled Trades

The reliability of qualification credentials plays a particularly important role in the skilled trades. In many trades requiring a license, the master craftsman’s certificate is a prerequisite for practicing a trade independently and for training skilled workers. At the same time, digital editing capabilities make it more difficult to unequivocally identify forged documents.

Digital processes that support authenticity verification and simplify manual verification procedures are already in use today.

One example is the digital certificate check developed by BuE Bildung und EDV Dienstleistungskonzepte GmbH. Using an app, master craftsman examination certificates and master craftsman certificates can be verified. In this process, a so-called hash value is generated from the document data and compared with a reference value stored in a secure system. If both values match, the document is considered unaltered. This provides companies and other organizations with an additional way to digitally validate proof of qualifications.

Digital Master Craftsman’s Certificate as the Next Step

The Düsseldorf Chamber of Crafts also relies on digital verification systems. For the first time, it has issued master craftsman certificates and master craftsman examination certificates in digital form in addition to the paper version. Graduates can request digital documents whose authenticity can be verified online using a unique verification code. Even minor changes to the document result in a different hash value and are thus immediately detected. In addition, a certificate of authenticity is provided that explains the verification process.

European Perspective with the EUDI Wallet

The development of digital credentials is also being advanced at the European level. The European Digital Identity Wallet (EUDI Wallet) is creating an infrastructure that will allow citizens to securely store qualifications and educational credentials on their smartphones and present them digitally as needed.

This will enable companies, government agencies, and other institutions to verify credentials seamlessly across different platforms. The goal is to ensure that digital certificates originate from trusted sources and that their authenticity can be reliably verified. Digital certificates thus complement existing verification systems and create new opportunities for the secure and standardized verification of professional qualifications.
