EU KIDS Act aims to make online spaces safer for children

On September 2026, the European Commission presented the EU KIDS Act (EU Keeping Internet Digital Spaces Accountable and Trustworthy), a legislative proposal aimed at creating a safer digital environment for children and teenagers. The initiative seeks to reduce online risks by introducing a gradual approach to social media access and requiring digital services to prioritise children’s safety and well-being.

About the proposal

The initiative would introduce age restrictions for social media, alongside stronger safeguards for children using online platforms, games and AI chatbots. It also addresses potentially addictive features, unwanted contact from strangers and the need for more privacy-friendly age verification. It aims to make digital services safer by design, placing greater responsibility on platforms to protect young users.

Why it matters

The proposal highlights the growing importance of digital safety, age-appropriate technology and responsible platform design. For educators, parents and digital skills professionals, it also reinforces the need to help children develop the knowledge and critical thinking skills required to navigate online environments safely and confidently.

The EU KIDS Act is a legislative proposal and must still be examined by the European Parliament and the Council before it can become law.
