EU moves to strengthen digital connectivity with new Digital Networks Act
The European Commission has proposed an upgrade of the Digital Networks Act (DNA). The new initiative aims to simplify and harmonise rules for digital connectivity across the EU, with the goal of accelerating investment in high-capacity networks and supporting Europe’s digital transformation.
The updated version of proposal aims to make it easier for telecom operators to deploy fibre and 5G networks across borders, reducing administrative burdens and creating a more integrated EU market for connectivity services. Stronger and more reliable digital infrastructure is seen as a key in emerging technologies such as artificial intelligence, cloud computing and advanced digital services.
For Europe’s workforce, the initiative is expected to support job creation and upskilling in areas such as network deployment, cybersecurity, data services and digital innovation. By improving access to fast and secure connectivity, the Digital Networks Act also creates better conditions for remote work, online learning and digital entrepreneurship across regions.
The proposal will be discussed by the European Parliament and the Council. If it would be adopted, it could play a central role in ensuring that Europe’s digital skills ecosystem is supported by modern, future-proof infrastructure.
''European innovation starts with a truly connected Europe. High-performance resilient digital infrastructure is essential in strengthening Europe’s leadership in innovation, competitiveness and digital sovereignty. Advanced and accessible connectivity will allow start-ups to harness the potential of AI, enable doctors to care for patients remotely, quickly and safely. Our goal is a digital environment where new technologies are readily available, affordable, and grounded in fair trustworthy rules that benefit people.'' - Henna Virkkunen, Executive Vice-President for Tech Sovereignty, Security and Democracy
