European Commission launches consultation to shape AI strategy for the cultural and creative sectors

The European Commission has launched a call for evidence to gather input on a future AI Strategy for theCultural and Creative Sectors (CCS), inviting creators, cultural organisations, AI developers, researchers, public authorities and citizens to help shape the initiative. The strategy, announced under the Culture Compass for Europe, will support the responsible adoption of AI while protecting Europe's cultural and linguistic diversity, creativity and creators' rights.

Why your input matters

Artificial intelligence is transforming the way cultural content is created, preserved and experienced. While AI can boost creativity, automate repetitive tasks, improve accessibility and foster innovation, it also raises challenges related to copyright, the unauthorised use of artists' work, algorithmic bias and the growing impact of AI-generated content. The Commission highlights the growing need for AI literacy, upskilling and reskilling to help professionals adapt to changing job profiles, adopt AI responsibly and strengthen Europe's digital competitiveness.

The strategy focuses on three main pillars: 

• Fostering innovation through collaboration between the cultural and AI ecosystems.
• Promotion of fair business models and the ethical use of AI while protecting European creativity.
• Support of the digital transformation of the cultural and creative sectors through targeted skills development and capacity building. 

It will build on existing EU initiatives, including the AI Continent Action Plan, the Apply AI Strategy and the AI Act, while leveraging programmes such as Creative Europe, Digital Europe and Horizon Europe.

The call for evidence is open until 11 September 2026, and the feedback received will contribute to the development of the strategy, expected in early 2027. Stakeholders across the cultural, creative and AI ecosystems are encouraged to share their perspectives. You can access it here.
