On 27 February 2025, Google formalised a strategic partnership with the University of Luxembourg by opening a Centre of Excellence and creating a Chair in Sovereign Artificial Intelligence within the SnT (Interdisciplinary Centre for Security, Reliability and Trust).

Centre of Excellence and academic collaboration

This new Centre of Excellence aims to strengthen research and training in two key areas: cybersecurity and artificial intelligence. The aim is to equip students, SMEs and the entire Luxembourg ecosystem with the skills needed to succeed in the AI era.

Supported by Google Cloud, the project also includes an academic component with creating a position dedicated to research on sovereign cloud systems. This Chair will attract high-level talent and position Luxembourg as a leading player in AI and cybersecurity research.

Google.org, the company’s philanthropic arm, will also provide funding to the University of Luxembourg as part of its international Cybersecurity Seminars programme. This support will provide students with hands-on training, internships, mentoring and hackathons to strengthen local cybersecurity skills.

New offices in Luxembourg

In parallel, Google announced the opening of new offices in Luxembourg, which will serve as a digital transformation hub focused on cloud and AI. This development is part of the Luxembourg sovereign cloud project, in particular through Clarence, a joint venture between Proximus Luxembourg and LuxConnect, ensuring data management in line with the EU courts.

This partnership, welcomed by the ministers and academic leaders present at the announcement at the Philharmonie, is part of the national strategy on data, AI and quantum technologies.
