Vocational Training is consolidated as a driver of digital talent in Spain

Vocational Training has ceased to be a secondary alternative to become a strategic piece within the Spanish technological ecosystem. Companies in the digital sector are increasingly demanding specialized and practical technical profiles, capable of quickly joining ever-evolving production environments. In this context, technological VET is experiencing one of its most important moments.

A strategic pillar in the digital economy

For years, many companies focused their selection processes almost exclusively on university profiles. However, the acceleration of digital transformation and the growing shortage of technological talent have profoundly modified this reality. Currently, about 47% of job vacancies in Spain request Vocational Training profiles, a trend especially visible in the technological field.

The change is also reflected in student behavior. While some engineering has lost around 33% of enrollments in the last two decades, technology VET continues to grow and show high employability rates. More and more young people find in these studies a direct route to digital professions with high labor demand.

Dual FP has been one of the great drivers of this transformation. This model allows a much closer connection between schools and companies, making it easier for training to be better adapted to the real needs of the market. Companies no longer want to limit themselves to hiring talent at the end of the training process; seek to participate from the beginning in the design of competences and in the practical training of future professionals.

High-demand profiles and employability

Among the most demanded technological VET profiles are those linked to software development, cybersecurity, cloud and systems administration, data analysis, artificial intelligence, telecommunications, industrial automation and the Internet of Things (IoT). Cybersecurity, in particular, has become a critical area due to the increase in digital threats and new European regulatory requirements.

In addition to technical skills, companies increasingly value so-called transversal skills. Continuous learning ability, adaptability, critical thinking, problem solving and communication have become fundamental competences in a technological environment where tools and methodologies are constantly evolving.

The employability of these profiles is especially high. The employment rate of graduates of higher vocational training is around 79.5%, and more than 60% find work in less than six months after completing their studies. In many cases, job placement is even faster than in other training paths thanks to the eminently practical approach of these programs.

Challenges and the future of digital training

However, there are still significant challenges. A certain gap persists between the speed of technological updating of companies and the ability of the educational system to adapt curricula. There are also some cultural and gender biases that limit access to technology professions, especially among young women.

Spain's great challenge is not only technological, but also educational and social. The digital economy needs to broaden its talent base and build more flexible training pathways, where VET and university do not compete with each other, but work as complementary pathways. Digital transformation will require professionals capable of continuous learning and re-skilling throughout their working lives.

Vocational training is no longer a second-rate option. Today it is one of the fundamental pillars on which the country's digital future is being built.
