Adult Learning and COVID-19: Challenges and Opportunities

This case study offers some insight into the short and long-terms impact of COVID-19 on adult learning and associated areas (economy, labour market). The aim of the case study is to examine the ways in which different societal groups, such as workers, parents, teachers and learners, have been affected by the ongoing health crisis. With remote education becoming the new norm, and schools going online, not just students and teachers were affected in terms of overall digital competence and equipment. Another impacted group - parents - were involved in learning facilitation, with some single parents particularly affected. 

The study also takes a holistic approach by taking into account the impact of the COVID-19 crisis on  training providers, teaching staff, and methods of delivery. It also proposes recommendations for adult learning systems to enable them to better respond to the learning needs of adults and the challenges in the current health and economic situation in Europe. In addition, with trends pointing to an increased supply and demand when it comes to online training and distance learning, the case study's recommendations can serve as a building foundation to better online education systems for organisations and schools.
