DigitalCheck NRW: Test and train digital media literacy – Germany Created byDörte Stahl|Updated09 March 2026The #DigitalCheck NRW platform consists of a free self-test and, based on the results, suggests further training opportunities. Users can also search for learning opportunities in a database without having to take the test. In addition, accompanying learning materials for developing media literacy are provided for both learners and teachers.Self-test with practice-oriented contentThe self-test currently comprises over eighty questions covering key topics relating to everyday digital life. In addition to basic technical knowledge, it also takes into account reflective and creative aspects of digital media use:Orientation in the digital media landscape: Which digital tools are helpful in everyday life? What do terms such as “artificial intelligence” mean?Technical basics: What should you pay attention to when setting up and using smartphones or tablets?Critical media use and data protection: How can personal data be protected?Digital communication and networks: How do messenger services and social networks work? What legal framework (e.g., copyright) must be observed?Information literacy: How can reputable sources be identified? How can disinformation or manipulative content be recognized?Creative and productive use of media: How can digital media be used creatively? After answering each question, participants receive feedback and in-depth information on the respective topic. After completing at least two test modules, an individual competency profile is created. It includes a score and the option to download a certificate. Based on their results, users receive recommendations for suitable further training courses. In addition to German, the self-test is offered in four other languages: English, Turkish, Arabic and Russian.Find further training opportunitiesEven without completing the self-test, visitors to the platform can search for learning opportunities. A database is available for this purpose, in which recognized training institutions from North Rhine-Westphalia can publish their offerings. Hundreds of courses covering a wide range of topics can be filtered by subject area or course format (in-person or online), among other criteria.Accompanying materialsMaterials such as explanatory videos (e.g., use of children's photos on the internet, recognizing disinformation) and a glossary are aimed at learners. For teachers, there are thematically organized collections of information and methods that support the teaching of media literacy. In addition, the magazine #digitalweiterwissen is published regularly, covering topics for various target groups: a mix of interviews, journalistic articles, checklists, and concise tips offers appealing opportunities to deepen knowledge.Operating body, funding, framework#DigitalCheckNRW is a project run by the Association for Media Education and Communication Culture (GMK) and is funded by the state government of North Rhine-Westphalia.
