Podcast: Career Guidance and AI – Future Skills for Young People

The podcast “Supporting Career Guidance” is aimed at career guidance teachers, trainers, and anyone else who supports young people in their transition from school to work.

The 9th episode, titled “Career Guidance and AI – Future Skills for Young People" explores the role of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in career guidance and learning. Host Felix Seibert-Daiker speaks with Susanne Alles, a vocational school teacher, media consultant, and AI expert, about skills, challenges, and changes against the backdrop of an increasingly AI-driven workplace.

The “4Cs” as a Guide in an AI-Driven Workplace

The episode focuses on the topic of what skills should young people be taught for their future careers. The “4Cs” are identified as a framework: "collaboration", "communication", "critical thinking", and "creativity".  The discussion explores how AI is changing the world of learning, which skills are coming more and more in demand, and how all this is reshaping the field of career guidance.

A recurring theme is dealing with generative AI. Many young people use AI tools as a instinctively - and extensively - yet they often lack a reflective understanding of what AI is, and what its direct (and indirect) impact may be. Beyond mere application, the focus is on critical understanding, reflecting on bias, verifying results, and actively shaping the future with AI.

Impact on Professional Life and the Labour Market

The episode also addresses potential changes in day-to-day professional life. AI can alter or reduce certain routine tasks. At the same time, it emphasises that the “human in the loop” concept remains essential, as AI systems can be prone to errors.

The discussion explores how this might change career entry points and job profiles. Against the backdrop of a changing world of work, the question is raised of how young people can be prepared for these developments and which skills will provide them with guidance.
