Database Security (MERIT)

"Database Security" is an online course, developed in the framework of the EU-backed MERIT initiative. MERIT, which is funded by the Digital Europe Programme of the European Union, consolidates Europe's best minds in cutting-edge technologies to create a highly skilled workforce. 

The aim of the MERIT project is to create an educational ecosystem for training digital specialists by bringing together universities, industry partners, research centres, and technology organisations. MERIT focuses on the design of a joint Master's programme that addresses the market needs in Artificial Intelligence, the Internet of Things, and Cybersecurity to boost the number of specialists in these areas. 

About this course

Database security concerns the use of various controls to protect the confidentiality, integrity and availability of databases. These controls can be technical (e.g. encryption, access controls), procedural/administrative (e.g. security policies, auditing), or physical (e.g. securing server rooms). This course examines the topics of database encryption, access controls, data masking, and key management.

• Module 4. Injection Attacks and Inputs Validation; 
• Module 5. Backup and Disaster Recovery; 
• Module 6. Network-Level Database Security; 
• Module 7. Modern Open Source Databases and Security Features; 
• Module 8. Advanced Threats in Database Environments

Learning outcomes 

By the end of this course, students will get to know the main techniques of ensuring the confidentiality and integrity of databases and get a good overview of the main security risks and concerns in that field. They will also learn the main types of controls and improve their knowledge of advanced threats in database environments.
