Digital Resilience against Disinformation (DOMINOES MOOC)

Interested in learning more about disinformation, how it works, its impact and what measures can be taken to combat it? This free MOOC developed within the context of the DOMINOES (Digital cOMpetences INformatiOn EcoSystem) project seeks to address this growing societal issue and build social and digital resilience to misinformation.

Course outline 

The course is split into 5 parts:

• The information environment from a security perspective: trends, threats, vulnerabilities, and future challenges
• Understanding the current challenge of disinformation and information manipulation: macroenvironmental and individual aggravating factors
• Mitigating the threat and building resilience to disinformation
• Advanced analytic and responding toolkit
• Simulation exercises, serious and wargaming to combat disinformation

The course is self-paced and is estimated to take up 5 hours per week over the course of 5 weeks. It’s free, but participants have the option to pay for a certificate. 

Why take this course? 

As strategies for spreading disinformation become increasingly more sophisticated and difficult to detect, it’s crucial for all citizens to gain the ability to recognise, assess and fight the spread of misinformation online. The course will use case studies and best practice examples to illustrate this and highlight the current challenges in the fight against disinformation.

By following this course, you will:

• Gain a comprehensive perspective on the information environment from a lens of state and citizen security 
• Recognise new threats associated with the emergence of new technologies
• Develop the ability to recognise disinformation and avoid spreading disinformation online
• Assess the impact of Fake News on society and democratic processes
• Understand how social media platforms play into the fight against the spread of disinformation online
• Enhance the ability to combat disinformation by providing general guidance on planning, designing and implementing counter-narratives and positive narratives
• Gain an understanding that the fight against disinformation is a shared responsibility among citizens 

This course was developed as part of the DOMINOES project in collaboration between: “Mihai Viteazul” National Intelligence Academy (MVNIA) in Romania, Ciberimaginario Research Group of the University Rey Juan Carlos in Spain, L-Università ta’ in Malta, and New Strategic Center in Romania. 

Who can participate?

The course is for students or teachers in the field of social and security sciences interested in the current information system – but it can be followed by anyone interested in the subject, as previous knowledge is not required.
