Justice, Fundamental Rights and Artificial Intelligence: The Impact of Automated Decision Making on Judicial Decision Making

This online course explores the legal and ethical challenges of using artificial intelligence in decision-making, with a particular focus on fundamental rights and EU regulations. Participants will develop a foundation in AI concepts, system types and the regulatory frameworks governing automated decision-making, while learning to identify key risks such as bias, lack of transparency and unclear accountability.

The course examines the use of AI in civil and criminal justice, including applications in evidence analysis and sentencing support, and considers their implications for fair trial rights, procedural fairness and judicial oversight. It also explores the use of AI in healthcare and its impact on informed consent, liability and regulatory compliance, as well as AI-enabled price discrimination and deceptive practices from a consumer protection perspective. Through case studies and legal analysis, learners will explore how innovation can be balanced with the protection of fundamental rights.
