Master of Science in Human Nutrition and Dietetics (SUSA)

Programme structure

The MSc in Human Nutrition and Dietetics is a two-year, full-time programme delivered through a combination of academic study and practice-based learning. Teaching takes place across autumn, spring, and summer semesters, integrating lectures, workshops, experiential learning, reflective practice, supervised research, and clinical placements.

In Year 1, students develop core knowledge and skills in nutrition science and dietetic practice.

• Modules focus on nutrition communication and counselling, food and nutrition across the lifecycle, dietetic assessment using the Nutrition Care Process, food science, and preparation for clinical practice
• Students also explore food service systems, research methods, medical nutrition therapy, and nutritional epidemiology, alongside developing clinical case management skills
• The year includes practical simulations and an initial 8-week supervised clinical placement in a healthcare setting, as well as the first stage of a research project

In Year 2, students progress to advanced practice, strengthening their ability to manage complex clinical cases and apply evidence-based dietetic interventions.

• The programme includes public health and community nutrition, advanced clinical dietetics, and community-led placement experience to support independent practice
• Students complete a second clinical placement, further developing professional competencies in line with CORU standards
• The year also includes leadership and innovation in health and social care, interprofessional learning, and completion of a structured research project

Across the programme, students develop skills in clinical reasoning, assessment and management of nutritional needs, and interdisciplinary collaboration.

Eligible students

Applicants must hold a bachelor’s degree (NFQ Level 8 or equivalent) with a minimum second-class honours (2:2). The degree must include prior study in Biochemistry and Human Physiology, with a minimum of 10 ECTS credits in each subject at Level 8.

Applicants in the final year of their undergraduate degree may apply, provided they can demonstrate that all entry requirements will be met by the end of June in the year of programme commencement.
