Piscine: 42 Luxembourg

Piscine: 42 Luxembourg

42 Luxembourg’s Piscine program is a 4-week, on-site, full day trial period to see if a learner is a good fit for 42, and vice versa. The program is based on the principles of gamification, learning-to-learn, and peer-learning. Our participants learn together and help each other – failures are opportunities for growth: test a program, understand your mistakes, and move forward.

Learning to learn

42’s program is based on the principles of gamification, learning-to-learn, and peer-learning. Our participants learn together and help each other – failures are opportunities for growth: test a program, understand your mistakes, and move forward.

During your program, you’ll get to experience from a selection of nearly 150 well-maintained projects that range from 2 days to 6 months, depending on their scope, complexity, and the learning path you’ve chosen.

A global network

Since its inception in 2013, 42 has grown to become the world’s largest IT school network that’s free, innovative, and open for everybody. Not only do we aim for openness and diversity in theory, but advocate for it in practice too: after completing the core curriculum, participants may decide to continue their specialisation in the 42 network elsewhere, in one of the 54 campuses spread across 31 countries.

Peer evaluations

In addition to an automated evaluation, all the modules must be evaluated by other candidates in the Piscine at 42. This is what we call peer evaluation. This is an opportunity to discover other ways to program and discuss topics tackled in the exercise. Even if the assessor and the assessed are not at the same level, everyone can benefit from this experience: peer evaluations are when you learn the most from your experience in the Piscine at 42.

Step 1: Online Games

The first step to entering 42 is registering on our website and playing a series of online games. These games are logic-based and will take around 2 hours to complete. Complete them on your own, as self-learning and independent thinking are one of the key ingredients to success at 42.

If completed successfully, we’ll invite you to the check-in, an orientation meeting on-site in Belval and sometimes online, together with other prospects.

Step 2: Check-in

During the check-in, you’ll be able to learn more about the program, meet the staff and other future learners, and ask any additional questions you might have.

Step 3: Piscine

The next and final step of the application process is the “Piscine”, a 4-week trial period that’s designed to help you become acquainted with 42’s pedagogical model, while simultaneously determining if you’re a good fit for 42. You’ll be swimming in code and learn how to collaborate to solve problems. The Piscine includes basic C programming exercises such as programming functions, variables, loops, conditions, and memory management. You are required to attend full-time.

Step 4: Go!

After evaluating the results of the Piscine, successful applicants will be contacted a few days later and are invited to begin their curriculum shortly after.

CONTENT

PART 1: Common Core

The first part of 42’s program is the core curriculum – you’ll get to experience learning the fundamentals of software engineering: programming in C, algorithms and software development, file systems, UNIX, sysadmin and network architecture. While everybody can progress at their own pace, this will most likely take around 12-18 months for most people.

After successful completion of the common core, you may choose to finish the program and receive your 42 certificate, attesting to the level you’ve reached, or you may continue further developing your skills in the specialisation.

PART 2: Specialisation

The second part is the specialisation, where participants get to decide which direction they want to move forward in: fields such as AI, mobile or web development, cybersecurity, or a combination of these fields are at your disposal – and more. Neutrality towards brands, technology and programming languages is emphasised in order to stay adaptive for the future. This program includes over 100 projects to complete in groups, and also includes internships and entrepreneurial programs. Each participant can decide on their own when they’re ready to enter the next step of their career and become an alumni.
