Signal processing algorithms in embedded systems (RESCHIP4EU)

Signal processing algorithms in embedded systems (RESCHIP4EU)

The course "Signal processing algorithms in embedded systems" is a self-standing module, developed in the context of the RESCHIP4EU project, with the support of the Digital Europe Programme of the European Union.

Reinforcing Skills in Chips Design for Europe (RESCHIP4EU) aims to support the excellence of EU higher education around embedded systems design in a holistic way, from silicon via System-on-Chip design and manufacturing to smart and safety-critical platform and application software.

About this course

The course aims to introduce the most frequent signal processing algorithms implemented in embedded systems. One of the main focuses is on processing time domain waveforms representing physical processes.

Course structure

The course is split in 6 parts, containing a total of 16 video lectures, including their handouts, as well as 3 MatLab exercises.

Topics

Modules cover the following topics:

  • Introduction to embedded systems (architecture, components, role of signal processing).
  • Filtering: linear filtering (FIR and IIR filters, design methods, properties, realisation considerations).
  • Spectral analysis: Discrete Fourier Transform (interpretation, properties, coherent/noncoherent sampling, different forms).
  • Increasing the accuracy and precision of measurements in embedded systems.
  • Sensor fusion: complementary filtering, Kalman filter for sensor fusion.
  • Inverse filtering: numerical correction of static and dynamic distortion
