VPNs and Secure Network Protocols (CyberSuite)

VPNs and Secure Network Protocols (CyberSuite)

This course introduces Virtual Private Networks (VPNs) and the secure network protocols that enable confidential, authenticated, and trustworthy communication across modern digital environments. Designed for learners seeking foundational knowledge in network security, the course explains how secure communication technologies protect data in transit and establish trust between systems and users.

"VPNs and Secure Network Protocols" is part of the CyberSuite project, which aims to bridge market gaps by establishing an easily accessible marketplace for cybersecurity services tailored to SMEs, fostering simplicity and accessibility in high-level security, privacy, and trust. The project is ran with the support of the Digital Europe Programme of the European Union.

About this course

Participants explore how VPNs are deployed in common network topologies and how IPsec protocols such as AH and ESP work together with IKE to establish secure communication tunnels. The course also examines how TLS and HTTPS secure web traffic, how Public Key Infrastructure (PKI) and certificate chains establish digital trust, and how identity and authentication protocols such as SSO, OAuth/OIDC, and Kerberos support secure access to services.

In addition, learners are introduced to privacy-focused technologies including Tor and PGP, exploring their practical applications, strengths, limitations, and real-world security considerations. Through structured modules and quizzes, participants develop an understanding of how modern secure communication protocols contribute to confidentiality, integrity, authentication, and privacy protection.

Learning outcomes

By the end of the course, learners will understand the role of VPNs and secure protocols in network security and be able to identify the main technologies used to secure communication and manage digital trust in contemporary systems.
