AURORAL (Architecture for Unified Regional and Open digital ecosystems for Smart Communities and wider Rural Areas Large scale application) is an EU Horizon 2020-funded project consisting of 25 organisations from 10 EU countries. The objective of the project is to establish an interoperable, open, and digital middleware/Data Broker platform for smart, notably rural ecosystem services in Europe, hence enabling equal opportunity for rural and urban Europeans. Cross-domain applications are used to demonstrate the AURORAL middleware/Data Broker platform across eight large-scale pilot regions in Europe.

The H2020-AURORAL Project (budget 15M€/investment platform: 50M€; 25 partners; 8+18 pilot-regions; 120 Smart Communities; 12 MS; 4 years; DG-Connect + DG-Agri) contributes to increase economic growth and interoperability and to tackle significant societal challenges, contributes to overcoming digital divide between rural and urban areas and to develop the potential offered by increased connectivity and digitisation of rural areas. The AURORAL middleware/cloud service/Data Broker was created to make it easier for different smart devices and services to work together. It helps them share information securely, communicate effectively, and provide valuable services to their users.

The project has designed a free of charge online AURORAL Academy which will allow the potential users to explore and exploit AURORAL's middleware/Data Broker for empowering regional ecosystems to exploit their opportunities in digitising resources, products, and services of smart communities.
