Iscte - University Institute of Lisbon

Iscte - University Institute of Lisbon is a public university education institution, created in 1972, with campuses in Lisbon and Sintra.

A new organisational structure was implemented in 2010, which resulted in the composition of decentralised organic units: four Schools, 16 Departments and eight Research Units.

In 2021 a new unit was launched, Iscte-Sintra, with the purpose of being "the first university school of reference in the field of Digital Technologies in Portugal". The Iscte Sintra Digital Technologies, Economy and Society unit started teaching in the 2022-2023 academic year, with the offer of eight degree courses that combine disciplinary areas of digital technologies with disciplinary areas of social sciences, economics and humanities.

Today, the teaching and research areas of Iscte are organised into five schools: School of Social Sciences and Humanities (ECSH); School of Sociology and Public Policies (ESPP); School of Management (IBS); School of Technology and Architecture (ISTA) and the most recent School of Digital Technologies, Economy and Society, located in Sintra.

With more than 13.000 students, in undergraduate (41%) and postgraduate (59%) programmes, 316 career teachers, 454 R&D researchers and 280 non-teaching staff, Iscte is proud to be one of the most dynamic and innovative universities in the country.

With a strong demand, Iscte offers 25 bachelor degrees, 59 master degrees and 25 doctorates, in addition to other training and post-graduate courses. The schools have filled all the available places and Iscte has a high rate of graduate employability, reaching, in most areas, results close to 100%.

The courses are attended by students of 94 nationalities and foreign students correspond to 23% of the total students. Currently, 59% of the students attend post-graduate education (masters, doctorates and postgraduations).

In 2020, the President of the Republic distinguished Iscte - University Institute of Lisbon with the "Ordem da Instrução Pública" (an honour for high quality services in education).

In 2021, construction began on Iscte Knowledge and Innovation, a complex designed to house the Technology Enhancement and Transfer Centre (CVTT). This research and knowledge transfer infrastructure - created in 2019 - will house eight research centres (all classified as Excellent or Very Good), ten laboratories and three observatories.

The Iscte main campus is located in the centre of Lisbon. It consists of four buildings (about 45 000 m2), one of which won a Valmor architecture award. Access to the campus is free and open to all.
