XR Workshop: Communicating the Energy Transition through Virtual Worlds (UPRAISE)

Event location
Aranjuez Campus, Universidad Rey Juan Carlos , C. del Capitán Angosto Gómez Castrillón, 91, 28300 Aranjuez, Spain

On 30 June, join the XR Workshop: Communicating the Energy Transition through Virtual Worlds, organised in the context of the UPRAISE project.

Over two days, students will collaborate in teams to design, produce, and publish a real WebXR site focused on the energy transition. Communications students will develop skills in virtual environments and data storytelling, while engineering and science students will learn how to translate complex knowledge into engaging and accessible narratives.

About this workshop

The workshop is organised by the UPRAISE project (under the Digital Europe Programme) and POWER projects, in collaboration with eComciencia, the Chair of Energy Transition and the Chair of Circular Economy of the URJC. It brings together communication, sustainability, and technology in a single experience—precisely the combination of skills needed to meet current job market demands and support Europe’s ambitions under the Digital Decade and the Green Deal.

This is a 2-day intensive summer course where communication and engineering students collaborate to transform energy transition data into immersive WebXR experiences, combining storytelling, virtual worlds, and sustainability.

Learning outcomes & structure

Participants will work in teams of 4–5 students, guided by expert tutors, following a hands-on, project-based approach. Each team will create a functional WebXR experience, from concept to final presentation.

Upon successful completion of this workshop, learners will understand how to:

  • Transform complex sustainability data into immersive narratives;
  • Design and build WebXR environments using platforms such as FrameVR;
  • Apply data storytelling techniques to enhance public understanding;
  • Develop interdisciplinary collaboration between communication and STEM profiles.

Programme

  • Day 1 (30 June 2026)
    • Opening session and keynote discussion on energy transition, circular economy, and digital communication;
    • Introduction to immersive communication and XR case studies;
    • Training in FrameVR and team formation;
    • Workshop I: Concept design (storyboard, narrative, data selection);
    • Workshop II: First steps in building virtual environments.

  • Day 2 (1 July 2026)
    • Workshop III: Guided production of the virtual space
