menABLE Educational Toolbox “Ctrl+Alt+GBV"

The menABLE Toolbox “Ctrl+Alt+GBV” is a visual educational resource for youngsters aged 13 to 18, which dives into the subject of gender-based violence online. Its aim to spark dialogue and discussion around gender and gender identity, facilitating reflection, and providing concrete guidelines for action. The toolbox is developed under the menABLE project, co-funded by the European Commission, and carried out by European Schoolnet, Child Focus (Belgium), CDYC - the Danish Safer Internet Centre, and FORTH (Greece), with the primary objective of tackling gender-based violence online through awareness-raising. 

Why this toolbox? 

A large part of young people's lives are spent online. Understanding all aspects of gender-based violence is crucial - including the different ways it manifests in physical spaces and in online environments. As young people grow up, it is equally important they get to know how gender-based violence presents online, so they can manage unpleasant and difficult online encounters. Another aim of the toolbox is to make students more aware of their own biases when they talk about gender. 

Why is this important? Gender-based violence does not affect girls and women in isolation: instead, it disproportionately impacts vulnerable groups, including young people, LGBTQI+ people, people with disabilities, and even men and boys.

Structure of the menABLE Toolbox

The material in the menABLE Toolbox is structured across 2 main types of content: 

• Dilemmas and quizzes (online): presented as first-person case studies, in which the group acts as an 'advice board', discussing different scenarios on how young people can act. Together with the dilemmas, the toolbox also offers guidelines to kick off discussions and tackle all relevant aspects.
  • All dilemmas are accessible through the interactive tool and accessible in 5 languages: Danish, Dutch, English, Greek and French.
• Challenges (on-site): the interactive tasks presented in the form of challenges give an opportunity for learners to work in groups in a more flexible way. 

The Toolbox is designed to equip teachers and educators with the necessary to use the materials in the most suitable way.
