EU Master in High Performance Computing (EUMaster4HPC) Created byGalina MISHEVA|UpdatedagoBlendedHigh-performance computing (HPC) is the foundation of breakthroughs that are shaping our world, from climate change simulation to revolutionising medicine and artificial intelligence (AI). It has the potential to dramatically accelerate digital transformation and the sustainability of key economic (and energy) sectors. To lead in this field, Europe needs bold thinkers, skilled pioneers, and strong collaboration.About the EUMaster4HPC consortium EUMaster4HPC is an HPC European consortium, funded by the EuroHPC Joint Undertaking to design and implement the first pan-European high-performance computing master programme. It emphasises collaboration across Europe, with innovative teaching paradigms (including co-teaching and the cooperative development of new content) that rely on the best specialists in HPC education working in Europe. It is composed of European universities, research/supercomputing centres, and industrial partners, with the mission of defining a joint HPC curriculum across Europe, and creating a collaborative network that leverages and strengthens the European HPCecosystem. The consortium is comprised of leading EU universities: University of LuxembourgUniversitat Politècnica de Catalunya (UPC)Politecnico di MilanoFriedrich-Alexander-Universität Erlangen-Nürnberg (FAU)Sorbonne UniversitéSofia University 'St Kliment Ohridski'Università della Svizzera ItalianaKTH Royal Institute of Technology Universities throughout Europe also take part in the project as contributing partners. About the EUMaster4HPC degreeThe innovative programme includes a new forward-looking curriculum, study plans, materials and methodologies designed by the EUMaster4HPC consortium. High-performance computing is becoming a cornerstone of Europe’s digital and industrial strategy, with applications that range from science and engineering to health and climate research. To fully harness these technologies, Europe needs highly skilled experts.Employers, researchers, HPC specialists, supercomputing centres, Centres of Excellence (CoEs), and technology providers support the implementation of this programme, which provides the base for further national and pan-European educational programmes in HPC in Europe. EUMaster4HPC graduates will form a new generation of HPC experts who are equipped to drive innovation, support European sovereignty in critical technologies, and fill urgent skills gaps across industries. The programme will focus on strengthening the European HPC ecosystem and respond to an increasing need for advanced digital skills in this area. The Master combines theoretical and applied courses with a Mastership (Internship and/or Master’s Thesis) in a multidisciplinary European environment. The programme’s first year covers the fundamentals of HPC (all awarding universities provide the same solid core curriculum)In the second year, you will choose one of six specialisations, which vary by the awarding university Learner profileProspective students must have at least:Bachelor in STEM (computer science, engineering, mathematics, statistics, physics, etc.)Sufficient proficiency (B2) in English (IELTS/TOEFL)The programme provides in-depth training in key areas such as:Numerical methods and data analysisSystem performanceHPC development and supportSystem architectureArtificial intelligence (AI)Quantum computingGraduates become highly qualified HPC experts - ready to work in academia, research centres, supercomputing centres, or industry, with an understanding of the world-class HPC ecosystem and its applications in different scientific and industrial domains. Learners also benefit from a true European learning environment and gain access to an international network of HPC leaders.
