Master's in Sensor Systems and Innovation (Chips of Europe) Created byKristin Imenes|Updated19 May 2026Start Date10.August.2026End date16.Jun.2028PresentialSmart sensor systems are one of the keys to unlocking the future. With this master-level course, developed within the Chips of Europe project, students learn the art of designing and integrating advanced sensor technologies to solve various health, ocean and environmental-related challenges. The program is ideal for those with a flair for innovation, who want to create solutions that address some of the most pressing challenges of the world we live in today. The Chips of Europe project tackles the EU semiconductor skills gap by modernising education, fostering collaboration between industry and academia, and building a strong talent base in this field throughout Europe. The project is supported by the Digital Europe Programme of the European Union. About this courseThe master's in Sensor Systems and Innovation equips learners with advanced, specialised skills in sensor technology, empowering them to address key challenges in health, marine, and environmental monitoring. The program is ideal for recent graduates and professionals seeking specialisation and in-demand skills, and promotes innovation in a rapidly growing field. It takes place in Norway over the course of 4 semesters at the University of South-Eastern Norway, and is conducted fully in English. Sensor systems have a wide range of applications, including health, welfare, environmental monitoring, smart cities, communication, energy systems, maritime industry, autonomous vehicles, and more. Learning outcomes Throughout the duration of this program, learners will get an opportunity to explore new technologies and applications for sensor systems. This means developing new sensor solutions, finding new ways to use existing sensors, or creating innovative systems and technologies that leverage the full potential of sensors. They will also learn how to design, develop and implement smart sensors and systems that interact with their surroundings. The curriculum also covers how sensors can be effectively integrated with other technologies and systems to address real-world challenges. The programme’s focus on innovation aims to inspire participants to develop new solutions and create added value based on their technological expertise. In their master’s thesis, students specialise in a self-chosen area within sensor systems. Examples can include designing and testing a new sensor, or using software to collect and analyse data from an existing sensor.Further informationSome facts regarding the programme:Start: August 2026Degree: Master of ScienceStudy mode: Full time (4 semesters), on campus - in Norway Further study: Possibility for subsequent PhD studiesLanguage of instruction: EnglishFind out more on thededicated page for this master's.
