Data Encryption (CYRUS)

Single offer

"Data Encryption", one of the courses developed as part of the Digital Europe Programme-funded CYRUS project, gives a sound overview of the main practical skills in cryptography, key management and data protection. Through real-life examples and hands-on exercises, participants will receive a gentle introduction to effectively securing data at rest and in transit, and ensure a comprehensive protection in the face of rapidly-evolving cyber attacks.

The CYRUS project has developed a range of training opportunities for SMEs in the manufacturing and transport sector on the topic of cybersecurity, and contributes to the EU Digital Decade target of 20 million ICT specialists in Europe by 2030.

About this course

The course is designed for individuals in roles that involve access to company networks, data and devices (including those working in IT, administration, security, management and even production), with an intermediate level of IT knowledge. It is particularly relevant for professionals representing the following sectors:

  • Transport sector – including companies and institutions involved in the transportation of people and goods by land, sea or air, supporting the efficient functioning of supply chains and social mobility.
  • Manufacturing sector – focusing on cybersecurity challenges specific to the manufacturing industry and industrial environments.
  • Small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) – seeking best practices for cybersecurity tailored to organisations of this size.

Course topics

The course begins with the fundamentals of encryption, introducing key concepts in cryptography and emphasising its role in modern data security. Participants will explore various types of encryption, including symmetric, asymmetric and hybrid methods, illustrated through practical examples and real-world applications.

The training then moves on to encryption key management – covering the secure generation, storage, exchange and administration of encryption keys. Building on this foundation, the course examines data protection techniques, including disk encryption to secure data at rest and the use of TLS/SSL protocols and VPNs to protect data in transit.

In the module dedicated to end-to-end encryption, participants will gain practical knowledge about secure communication – including message and email encryption – and learn best practices for maintaining privacy.

Learning outcomes

By the end of this course, participants will:

  • Understand encryption principles and the importance of cryptography in data protection
  • Implement encryption methods securely in workplace environments
  • Use encryption tools effectively and respond to data protection incidents confidently.

More details

The training is free of charge and offered as an e-learning course, available on demand from April 2025 to October 2025.
