Jožef Stefan Institute (JSI) is the largest research institute in Slovenia: its roots go all the way back to 1949, when the entity was first established. Today, the institute is home to over 1.000 members of staff, specialising in natural sciences, life sciences and engineering. 

The institute's main research areas are physics, chemistry, molecular biology, biotechnology, and information technology. It specialises in areas like production and control technologies, ICTs, knowledge technologies, new materials, environmental protection technologies, nanotechnologies and nuclear engineering.
