The future of Artificial Intelligence and the implications for Materials Science workshop
The development, production and use of new materials is one of the most important areas of science and innovation, from economic, social, and environmental points of view. At the same time, Artificial Intelligence (AI) is already having a significant impact on the progress of this sector.
The European Commission’s Directorate-General for Research and Innovation and the OECD’s Directorate for Science, Technology and Innovation are jointly organising an online workshop on Tuesday 16 December 2025 on the impact of AI developments on the future of Materials Science, The future of Artificial Intelligence and the implications for Materials Science.
Agenda
This one-day workshop will provide information on:
- The current and potential future impacts of AI in areas ranging from computational design of new materials to autonomous laboratory systems.
- The most important recent achievements in the field.
- What AI cannot yet achieve.
- The areas where progress is most needed and how scientific developments can be translated into real impact on a large scale.
- The key policies and infrastructures that facilitate progress.
Particular attention will also be paid to the benefits of developing ambitious strategic projects around critical materials. With your participation, you will have the opportunity to listen to important experts from academia, industry, and policy-making.
