2nd National Open Data Competition “Bank of Greece Datathon 2025”
The Bank of Greece, in cooperation with the Open Technologies Alliance (GFOSS), is organising the 2nd National Open Data Competition “Bank of Greece Datathon 2025”. The aim is to create original applications and ideas using new technologies and the use of open data, provided through the Bank's Open Data Portal, in combination with other open data sources. The Bank of Greece has been a pioneer among the national central banks in the field of open data with the operation of the Open Data Portal since 2018.
The submission of entries started on September 19th and will end on November 21st. The Competition will end on December 6-7, 2025, with an event that will take place in Athens (IMPACT HUB ATHENS, Karaiskaki 28), in the context of which the final proposals of the teams will be formed through a mentoring process, the presentations of the proposals will take place and the winners will be highlighted.
Focus Areas and Goals of the Datathon
The Datathon of the Bank of Greece is an open innovation technological action aiming to create original applications and ideas using new technologies and utilizing open data, provided through the Open Data Portal of the Bank of Greece, in combination with other open data sources.
Applications and ideas should generate added value and promote digital transformation in important sectors of the economy and society. Priority will be given this year to the real estate and tourism sectors:
- Data & Real Estate Market Policies
- Applications & Policy Suggestions for Sustainable Tourism
The challenges included in the above themes, as well as the detailed instructions for participation are described in the Bank of Greece Datathon 2025 Website.
Participants will have the opportunity to claim prizes worth a total of EUR 6 000, as well as to discover the world of open data by collaborating with ‘mentors’ from the Bank of Greece, the Open Technologies Organisation (ELA/LAK), the Ministry of Digital Governance, the GR digiGOV-innoHUB Innovation Hub, the University of the Aegean and the National Technical University of Athens.
The Bank of Greece and Open Data
In 2023, the Bank of Greece has already successfully completed the 1st National Open Data Applications Competition. Additionally, it leverages the innovative potential of open data, having launched the Open Data Portal in 2018.
Through the Portal, statistical datasets certified by the Open Data Institute are available to researchers and the general public, in a format that allows them to be read and processed directly by computers. The collection, processing, and publication of the Bank's Open Data are carried out in accordance with international standards for open data.
Tender procedure and timetable
- 19 September – Announcement of the 2nd National Open Data Applications Competition, in the context of the Connect 2.0 event organised by the Ministry of Digital Policy
- 19 September – Opening of participations
- 20 October – Infoday
- 31 October – Initial idea submission
- 14 November – Online mentoring
- 21 November – Deadline for submission of participations
- 6-7 December – Participation in Datathon – Final phase
