Established in 2011 as part of the Ministry of Finance, the Agency for Digital Government is in charge of implementing the Danish Government’s policies for developing the digital public sector as well as for major parts of the Danish public digital service infrastructure.

A Joined-Up Digital Public Sector

The Agency for Digital Government is the engine behind the continuous development of a joined-up digital public sector. We do so by facilitating public-sector collaboration.

The Danish public sector has used digital technologies since the 1960s. And for more than 20 years, public institutions at all levels – whether central, regional, or municipal administrations – have worked strategically together to deliver the best possible public services by embracing digital solutions for people and businesses in Denmark. The strategic-collaborative approach across levels of government has created a digital mindset and the vision of a digital public sector.

This means that the Danish Government’s digital ambitions extend to all levels of government, including ministries, agencies, public hospitals, and municipal administrations, as well as self-governed public institutions such as the Danish universities.

Digital Public Services

We believe that digital solutions are a prerequisite in a modern welfare society to create a coherent and accessible public sector focused on the needs of people and businesses.

One of the milestones in the Danish digital journey was the national Digital Post system, which gave all residents and businesses a single digital platform for communicating with all public authorities in Denmark.

Since November 2014, it has been mandatory for people over the age of 15 to receive letters from the public sector digitally through this system. Similarly, it is mandatory for people and businesses to use digital self-service solutions when accessing public services.

To make communication and information exchange between the public sector, businesses, and residents as easy as possible, the Agency for Digital Government is responsible for a wide variety of public-sector digital tools and solutions to create a joined-up national digital service infrastructure.

Priorities of the Agency for Digital Government

In May 2022, the Danish Government launched the National Digital Strategy, which lays out the strategic approach to the digital development of Danish society.

Simultaneously, a new digital strategy for the public sector is currently being developed in close collaboration with the Danish municipalities and regions.

These strategies will not only shape the work of the Agency for Digital Government but also show the direction of the Danish digital journey in the coming years.

Presently, the work of the 350 employees at the Agency for Digital Government focuses on six priorities:

  1. Developing and operating the national public digital service infrastructure, which is central to delivering services across the public sector.
