Supercomputing MOOC

This Massive Open Online Course (MOOC) on Supercomputing, created by the EPCC at the University of Edinburgh and Partnership for Advanced Computing in Europe (PRACE), in collaboration with SURFsara from the Netherlands, offers an introduction to the world of supercomputers, high performance computing (HPC) and technological breakthroughs in the field.

The aim of this course is to equip participants with an overview of how supercomputers function and help them understand how the development of computer simulations has contributed to providing solutions in science, industry and academia. 

Objectives and details of the MOOC

The MOOC takes learners through a wide range of topics related to the development, functioning and deployment of supercomputers and high performance computing technology in order to equip them with a broader perspective of the technology and its development. The course introduces basic supercomputing terminology and provides an overview of the ways in which supercomputers are built (in comparison to desktop computers and their evolution), as well as different scientific discoveries and breakthroughs that have been made possible by supercomputing. In addition, the course also touches upon computer simulations and the nature of performing virtual experiments to predict real-life events and solve current challenges. 

The MOOC is instructor-led, giving an opportunity to participants to learn from some of the best experts within the European supercomputing field. It can be audited free of charge and takes 5 weeks to complete, with an average of 3 hours commitment time per week. Users can also choose to receive a certificate for a small fee. The course combines sound technical expertise with an interactive learning environment, which offers a space for participants to debate and discuss topics and themes with their peers, and learn from a strong and active community.
