Tackling gender-based violence online (menABLE MOOC)

'Tackling gender-based violence online' is a massive open online course (MOOC), developed as part of the EU-funded menABLE project, carried out by the Danish Centre for Digital Youth Care (also known as the Danish Safer Internet Centre), Child Focus - Belgium, the Greek Foundation for Research and Technology – Hellas (FORTH), and coordinated by European Schoolnet.
menABLE stands for 'Empower Manpower against online gender-based violence', with the project aiming to raise awareness on the importance of addressing all aspects around gender-based violence online.
Why this course? Background and context
As the pace of development and uptake of digital technologies intensifies and young people spend a larger and larger portion of their time in digital environments, gender-based violence online is a critical challenge to address. Thus, it becomes essential to examine and identify the different ways in which gender-based violence manifests in online spaces. What is more, the issue is not isolated to women and girls but also disproportionately impacts marginalised groups, like young people, LGBTQI+ people, people with disabilities - and even men and boys.
Target audience
The MOOC is designed for teachers of all subjects in secondary schools. Primary school teachers may also find some of the material useful, while not all would be suitable to the youngest learners. The MOOC is also ideal for other professionals in education and the wider school administration, like headmasters, support staff, parents, and policymakers with an interest in the topic.
Learning outcomes
By the end of this course, participants will learn to:
- Recognise, identify and understand the nature of gender-based violence online and identify the main issues and challenges associated with it.
- Explore and design strategies to address gender-based violence and the risks it poses both to individuals and communities.
Teachers taking this course will improve their ability to select and assess educational resources on the subject that are tailored to the individual learning objectives of their students. Ultimately, the MOOC aims to boost the ability of teacher when it comes to empowering young people in taking action to address the issue head-on.
