Budapest University of Technology and Economics (BME) is Hungary’s leading university of technology with eight faculties. Around 1,200 lecturers, researchers and other graduates, as well as numerous guest lecturers and practising experts are involved in the teaching and research activities of BME in nearly 80 departments and institutes. Around 12% of BME’s nearly 22,000 students are foreigners, coming from more than 30 countries. 18 of BME’s professors/researchers are members of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences and another 57 hold a DSc degree from the Academy.

Since the 1990s, the Faculty of Electrical Engineering and Informatics has played a central role in artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning education and research in Hungary. As the importance of AI has grown over the last decade, several other faculties of BME have also become involved in AI education and the development of AI applications, such as the Faculty of Economy and Social Sciences, the Faculty of Transportation Engineering and Vehicle Engineering, the Faculty of Architecture and the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering. BME also plays a leading role in the Hungarian Artificial Intelligence Coalition, established in 2018. Its nearly 370 members include research institutes, universities, industrial, commercial and financial companies, international corporations, banks, ministries and other public authorities.
